The Mom Who Laughs With Her Boys Because Life Is Too Damn Short (Part 3/3)

Guest User May 26, 2018

By A PCMH Community Parent

So my son asked me to write a poem for him. I can't usually do such a request on demand, as my creativity doesn't flow like that. Here it is though, after several rounds of edits . . .

An Ode To ADHD (for my son)

You told me to write you a poem
About your ADHD
You wanted me to say how awesome it was
To have it—you and me.

You said, 'it's a superpower!'
And I'm glad you believe that's true
Because together we're a dynamic duo
You and me, me and you.

So let's start off by saying it can be,
A superpower, for us two
And I want you to truly believe that,
Yes I really, really do.

Because—those struggles that you have?
With relationships, words and thoughts?
Are struggles you'll have forever,
Something I have been taught

But you'll have to learn to deal with them,
Maybe keep them close, or inside
They won't always be that helpful
And they can be super hard to hide

But some of our superpowers,
Like persistence—and resilience too
Can be there for us during those hard times
And can be what gets us through

And humour—yes, our humour
It can mask how we really feel,
But it also gives us that release
When, sometimes, life gets too real

See, we can use our superpowers wisely,
Or we can let them sink our ship
It's all about making good choices,
And making sure they stick

So keep on thinking it's awesome,
And believing your superpowers are real
And you can live life to its fullest,
And oh—what a life you'll feel!
